All about the Curtiss Shrike A-8 & A-12, design and development, 1930's US Army Air Corps service. Includes A-8 scale plans.
The Curtiss A-8 and A-12 ground-attack (Dive Bomber) Shrike aircraft were used extensively by the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC) during the inter-war years. The A-12 mark differed from the A-8 in that it had a radial air-cooled engine instead of the in-line water-cooled engine of its predecessor.
The Shrike was not used in battle by the USAAC; however, in 1937, Shrike A-12s of the 9th Group of the Chinese Nationalist Air Force engaged in a successful dogfight with Aichi D1A1 Bi-Plane Dive Bombers of the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service.
This article goes in-depth into the Shrike A-8, covering its design and development and the use made of it in service.
Full A-8 scale plans are also included alongside 2 specification sheets.
