Bristol Type 170 Pilots Notes: Famous RAF Freighter, Airliner & Air Ferry
Designed initially as a rugged transport for the Air Ministry (RAF), the company soon recognised the potential for it meeting the demands of civilian operators. In this guise it was highly popular, being adopted by no less than 75 civil operators, among them Silver City and Dan-Air, as well as 78 national air forces;
Argentina, RAAF (34 Sqn), Burma, RCAF, Iraq, New Zealand (1, 3 & 41 Sqns), Pakistan (6 Sqn). The 170 was not operational within the RAF but was used by A&AEE Boscombe Down and the Telecoms Research Establishment.
