With deliveries to RAF squadrons commencing in mid-1939, the Defiant should have been ideally placed to play a major part in the oncoming struggle for the supremacy of British skies. However, encumbered by its manned turret sporting 4 MGs, the aeroplane was no match for the nimble, single-seat Luftwaffe fighters and, after a spell as a radar-equipped night fighter, in 1942 took over the SAR duties of the Lysander. 19 pages in colour and b&w, including a full cutaway.
