The Avro Vulcan has been described as the Military Icon of the Cold War, a beautiful and deadly war bird that, in the event, didn't actually see action until it was teetering on the edge of withdrawal from service. The creation of this, the first Delta jet nuclear bomber, started immediately after the end of WWII, when the British Ministry of Defence issued the operational requirement, OR229, which detailed the speed, operating height and range of a new aircraft for the RAF aircraft capable of carrying a bomb load of 10,000lbs.
The story of how the UK Aviation Industry rose to the challenge presented by OP229 to create not one, but three outstanding aeroplanes which became know as Britain's V-Force, is enthralling. This document charts how A.V.Roe and Co.Lts (AVRO), creators of the Lancaster bomber, interpreted the detailed specification in the manufacture of 136 Vulcans, which flew in RAF squadron service from June 1956 to March 1984. The tale is told through contemporary articles, pictures and reports taken from the specialist aviation press of the day, RAF archives and comments/reports from those involved.
